CAVEAT EMPTOR: LET THE BUYER BEWARE

BUYING AUDIO VIDEO EQUIPMENT ONLINE CAN BE DANGEROUS

There are many important things to consider when shopping for audio video equipment online.  First, many manufacturers have no authorized online retailers.  There are many sites that sell these products illegally.  Products bought from these sites will not be backed by the manufacturer’s warranty.  To be safe, go to the manufacturer’s website to see if the online retailer is a legitimate dealer.  They will have a list of their authorized retailers.

Second, there is no guarantee that the product will be what is called “A” stock or direct from the manufacturer.  It could be a "B" stock or lower which is an item that for some reason did not met the factory's standard of production.  These are usually sold in bulk to outlet retailers or large warehouse stores.  It could also be a refurbished item or a gray market product.

Third, an online retailer, legitimate or not, cannot give you the support that a local retailer can.  Local retailers have well-trained sales people that know the product and know how it will work in your particular environment.  Local retailers can also provide certified installation and authorized service on all products they sell for their customers.

Finally, you do not always save money by shopping online.  All authorized online dealers cannot beat the prices that your local dealer will have.  Authorized online dealers will always sale at retail prices while local dealers will usually have prices discounted off retail.

Yes, you can find some low prices on the internet from illegal and unauthorized retailers, but always ask yourself is the risk worth the few extra bucks you might save?  So be careful.  You really do get what you pay for.  CAVEAT EMPTOR, buyer beware. What is more important, saving a buck or two, or establishing a relationship with a local dealer who will provide you with a warranted product, installation and service to back it up, and the time of a knowledgeable and caring salesperson?
